Definition: Federalists and Anti-Federalists

Federalists favored the Constitution and were led by James Madison, George Washington, and Alexander Hamilton.

Anti-Federalists were scared that the Constitution might put too much power in the hands of the government. They were led by James Winthrop, John Hancock, George Clinton, and George Mason.

Note: Thomas Jefferson (in France), and John Adams (in Great Britain) were not present for the debate.
