Question: Why did people turn to Communism in China? (scroll down for answer)

Answer:

1. Anti-imperialistic sentiment, notably against Japan. People wanted a new alternative in leadership.

2. Communism seemed to be working in the USSR. Lenin had close ties to the Communists in China.

3. By 1930, Jiang Jieshi's government was seen as corrupt. He also didn’t help many of the starving peasants.

4. Communists promised land reform and equality.

As seen in the Soviet Union, Mao offered an increase in women’s rights. This meant marriage rights and an end to being publicly subservient. After he secured power, women were expected to provide for the state as well as their families.
