Definition: Deng Xiaoping and the Four
Today, China is a leading industrial
power in the world. However, until about 1980, it lagged behind.
Deng Xiaoping helped get the ball rolling on
industrializations with a program called the
Four Modernizations. Inheriting this policy from a decade
before, he set new goals for agriculture, industry, and technology.
Small businesses were permitted to operate, and with their profits,
people began to purchase consumer goods. By 2000, China became an
industrial giant, and the fastest growing economy in the world.
