Definition: Election of 1864

Lincoln beat George B. McClellan (who he had fired as Commander of the Army of the Potomac)

Lincoln put Andrew Johnson, a Democrat, as his runningmate to attract Democratic votes in the North. This decision would lead to great controversy during the Reconstruction Era.
