Question: What do I need to know about the Civil War in the West?  (scroll down for answer)

Answer:

The Union did a little better in the West. You should know:

1. Battle of Vicksburg. The Union won, and divided the Confederacy in half by controlling the Mississippi River.

2. Battle of New Orleans. Led by Admiral David Farragut, the Union won there.

3. As stated in an earlier flashcard, the Battle of Shiloh saw the Union win on the second day. It gave prominence to the little known Ulysses Grant.
