Definition: New Nationalism vs. New Freedom

The Election of 1912 saw two progressive candidates who wanted a more active role for the government in economic and social reform. However, they differed a bit in that:

Roosevelt’s The New Nationalism would bust only bad trusts, while keeping the good ones. He supported a minimum wage, and social issues such as women’s suffrage and healthcare.

Wilson’s The New Freedom promised to bust more trusts than Roosevelt would. Wilson also wanted banking reform and lower tariffs.
