1. Parts of the religion were brought to India by the Aryans, or Indo-European people who settled in the Indus River Valley as early as 1500 BC.

2. The sacred texts are called the Vedas. The oldest one is the Rig Veda.

3. Major settlements in India were along the Ganges and Yamuna rivers.

4. The long epic in Indian history is called the Mahabharata. It's a poem with over 100,000 verses.

5. The Upanishads were dialogues between teachers and students. They helped explain renunciation of materialism and reaching a level of perfect understanding. Like other writings, these were written in Sanskrit.

6. The gods to know are: Brahma the creator, Vishnu the protector, and Shiva the destroyer..
