Definition: Stamp Act 1765

A direct and internal tax on all legal documents. A royal stamp had to be placed on the parchment of a document to be official. Of course, that stamp was taxed. Remember: A direct tax was a tax added (like a sales tax.) An internal tax was on items within the colonies. The Act would be repealed when Benjamin Franklin lobbied Parliament.
