Definition: Pearl Harbor

On December 7, 1941 the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor by air. The sneak-attack resulted in 2,300 American soldiers killed, many of whom were aboard the USS Arizona.

After FDR’s “Day of Infamy” speech, Congress declared war on Japan. Shortly after, Germany declared war on the US. In the war, the United States, Britain, France, and the Soviet Union were the major allies. They fought the Axis Powers, which consisted of Germany, Italy, and Japan.
