Question: What do I need to know about the War in the Pacific (Japan)?

 Answer:

1. Douglas MacArthur was the commander.

2. The United States followed a strategy of island hopping before reaching mainland Japan. Some of the islands attacked were Midway, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa.

3. Truman decided a mainland invasion of Japan would be too costly, so he put in the order for the Enola Gay to drop Little Boy (the Atomic Bomb). On August 6, 1945 Hiroshima was bombed resulting in the deaths of about 140,000 people. Nagasaki was bombed three days later leading to an estimated 70,000 deaths.

4. Japan surrendered on August 15, 1945. V-J (Victory in Japan) Day would be on September 2nd.
