Yes it's true. While the British were destroying Fort McHenry, Francis Scott Key was writing poetry. His poem was put to an older hymn years later, and became our National Anthem. But remember, originally, it was poetry ... and there are four verses, not just one!

Statue for George Armistead who led the American forces at Fort McHenry. His nephew, Lewis A. Armistead, is famous for rallying Confederate troops at Gettysburg during Pickett's Charge. He famously put his hat on his sword.
