Robert Gould Shaw led the Massachusetts 54th up Battery Wagner. His regiment helped show that African Americans could be valuable soldiers for the Union cause. Even Jefferson Davis wound up supporting Black Regiments in the waning days of the Confederacy. More popularly, the Massachusetts 54th's story can be seen in the movie -- GLORY -- in my eyes, the best Civil War movie of all time.
