Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA)
This 1996 law defined marriage as between a man and a woman.
Section 3 of this act banned same-sex marriage couples from
receiving over a thousand federal benefits such as, health
insurance and retirement savings. Section 3 was declared
unconstitutional in US
v. Windsor in 2013.
