Definition: Constitutional/Limited
Monarchy
Under the English rule of William and
Mary, the absolute monarchy ceased to be. Instead, a new limited
monarchy prevailed with Parliament having immense strength in the
creation of laws. Parliament created the Bill of Rights in 1689 that
ensured freedoms of speech, fair taxation, and other personal
liberties. To recap, the three documents that limited the monarchy
over the years were:
1. Magna Carta - 1215 - The Great
Charter was forced upon King John to sign. This document limited the
king's power and gave rights to the people.
2. Habeaus Corpus Act - 1679
3. Bill of Rights - 1689
