Question: Seriously, do I need to know anything about the War of 1812? (scroll down for answer)

Answer: Depends on your teacher. Here are the main events:

1. Washington DC is burned by the British -- the White House (then called the Executive Mansion or Palace) is also burned.

2. Old Ironsides, the USS Constitution, sees legendary naval battles.

3. Francis Scott Key writes his Poem "Defence (sic) of Fort McHenry," which later becomes the basis for the Star Spangled Banner.

4. Andrew Jackson becomes a hero at the Battle of New Oreleans, that ironically was fought after ...

5. The Treaty of Ghent was signed. This ended the war with no land changes.

6. War Hawks want War ... Doves want peace.
