Question: What are some arguments supporting dropping the atomic bomb?  (scroll down for answer)

Answer:

1. Put a speedy end to the worst war in world history.

2. Show the world, and mostly the Soviets, that America was a great superpower.

3. The Americans suffered terrible casualties in the Battle of Okinawa in 1945. A mainland invasion of Japan could lead to over one million casualties.

4. The Manhattan Project (bomb plan) cost about $2 Billion, and should be used to display a triumph of American science.

5. The Japanese refused an unconditional surrender. Adhering to the Bushido Code, kamikaze pilots would sooner die than surrender.

6. The Japanese people were warned with leaflets describing the potential use of a new weapon. Still, there was no surrender.
