Question:
What was the
Church and Holy Roman Empire's reaction to Luther's teachings?
Answer:
Pope Leo X
excommunicated
(kicked out of the Church) him when he refused to take back his
words.
In 1521, Luther
then stood trial in front of the Diet (assembly) of Worms at Worms,
Germany. Again, he wouldn’t retract his statements. Holy Roman
Emperor Charles V issued the
Edict of Worms,
which labeled Luther a heretic. It also banned his writings and
ideas. Still,
Lutherans still
followed his ideas.
