1. After civil war
plagued Rome, Julius Caesar rose to power. He was elected consul in
59 BC and along with two others, made up a
triumvirate
of rulers.
2. Caesar became a
dictator, or absolute ruler, who conquered land in Greece, Western
Europe, Egypt, and Asia.
3. He gave citizenship
to some in the conquered territories, and preached land reform to
aid the poor.
4. He became dictator
for life in 44 BC, but was assassinated shortly thereafter on March
15, 44 BC...the Ides of March.
