The Good Neighbor Policy, c1933
"In
the field of world policy I would dedicate this nation to the policy
of the good neighbor--the neighbor who resolutely respects himself
and, because he does so, respects the rights of others." -- FDR.
Pan-Americanism was a divergence from the Imperialism seen in the
early 1900s. Although FDR had many economic interests in mind, this
policy hoped to mitigate fuming ultra-nationalist and anti-US
movements within Latin America. No longer would the US rule with the
Big Stick in Latin America.
