Sherman marched his men from Atlanta to Savannah, and "bummers" lived off of the land and the townspeople. Much of the South was burned and pillaged. Lives and fortunes were wiped out. Savannah and Charleston are probably the two nicest cities in the South. Sherman had personal ties to both cities, and spared them. He turned Northwest of Charleston, and somewhat peacefully delivered Savannah. "Sherman's March" became a march for the ages to the Union, and a sad event for Dixie. The above picture is a bit ironic -- the bank was destroyed, but the Saloon was left untouched.
