Sherman marched his men from
Atlanta to Savannah, and "bummers" lived off of the land and the
townspeople. Much of the South was burned and pillaged. Lives and
fortunes were wiped out. Savannah and
Charleston are probably the two nicest cities in the South. Sherman
had personal ties to both cities, and spared them. He turned
Northwest of Charleston, and somewhat peacefully delivered Savannah.
"Sherman's March" became a march for the ages to the Union, and a sad
event for Dixie. The above picture is a bit ironic -- the bank was
destroyed, but the Saloon was left untouched. |
