10 TIPS ON RENTING A CAR FOR A ROADTRIP THAT WILL SAVE YOU SERIOUS CASH.

8. Insurance can be good or useless. I have heard different theories on insurance. First, that it is a waste if you have normal insurance. Second, it can save you money in the long run. This depends on  your personal preference, and depends what you are doing. If you are going offroading in some crazy terrain, or driving in Manhattan, you may find it peace of mind to get the insurance. I know I drive differently if I buy their insurance! It’s fun, and can be somewhat like a video game! But without the insurance, if the company says you owe them money, you may wind up raising your own insurance rates in the long run, and paying a high deductible. By the way, if you are going to Canada or Mexico, call your insurance provider first to make sure your rates are reciprocal.

9. Keep checking back for better rates. Car prices change with the winds. Sometimes you will find better rates even a day before you leave. I make it a habit to check back once every week or so, even months before I am set to leave on a trip. You can save hundreds of dollars with new rates. You can find out specials as well at specialty travel sites like www.travelzoo.com.

10 Coupons. You have to love them. You can get coupons from many places, sometimes even the car company’s website. One of the things you can get is the Entertainment Book. Besides giving you hundreds of dollars worth of coupons, you can also get rental car codes that can give you significant discounts. First, you get a discount just for having the Entertainment Book. Second, you can then enter a coupon for a free day, or car upgrade. On my last trip, this book saved us $80 before ever stepping foot in the car.
