Jews
have been in South America since about the time of conquest. However,
in Peru, many were known as "Conversos," as they had to convert
because of the Spanish Inquisition. In the New World, many conversos
secretly practiced their faith, despite claiming to be Christian.
There is an eerily similar similarity between the Jews and the
Incas. Both suffered at the hands of
forced conversions. Above is the main square of Lima, and on the right
are the remains of Francisco Pizarro, who conquered the Incas. In
Cusco, we saw this Jewish laundry with Hebrew letters outside of it. I
wasn't fast enough with the camera, as we were in a taxi ... but of
all places in the world to find Jews, I thought that was the most
remote yet. Above is a restaurant in Cusco with Hebrew letters, and
smurfs for some reason. I don't think too many of the locals order in
Hebrew.
